Hi all,

 

We hope that you are keeping well as the weather begins to cool down. There seem to be a few cold and viruses going around at the moment, so we thought it might be a good idea to share some tips on staying healthy, and how SHINE can help you to stay fit and healthy! (from Body + Soul)

 

1. Boost your diet with fresh fruit and vegetables.

Most of us know that Vitamin C is good for keeping colds and flu at bay, but do you know that you can get it from more than just citrus?

Broccoli, capsicum and kiwifruit are all high in Vitamin C.

Spinach, carrots and beetroot are all full of essential vitamins and minerals to keep your immune system strong as well.

 

2. Exercise.

As the days get shorter, and the weather makes you feel like staying snuggled up indoors, it is as important as ever to keep exercising! Research suggests that regular exercise helps boost immune response, and keeps you feeling great!

SHINE has several exercise classes per week.
We see every day the benefits for our consumers who exercise regularly. They are steadier on their feet, and enjoy the social side of joining exercise groups each week.
Quite a few of our participants have become friends and go for a coffee after an hour class at SHINE- life is all about balance!

 

3. Stay connected.

Socialising is a great immune booster! You are busy staying active, and having a good time, which strengthens the immune system. The SHINE Reablement Centre is a great way to socialise, make new friends and enjoy delicious meals. Our cook Katie is always busy in the kitchen preparing delicious and nutritious meals. If you are looking to get out and about, we offer multiple outings; including weekly shopping centre outings, and bus trips to explore Perth and it's surrounds. If you feel like you're spending a bit too much time at home, or start to feel lonely, you can call SHINE and arrange to pop for lunch, and meet some of our great members!

 

4. Sleep well.

Sleep is very important to keeping well. Lack of sleep can affect the immune system, making you vulnerable to nasty colds and flu's.If you find you're not sleeping well, try to have a relaxing time before bed, perhaps reading a book. also try to avoid too much tea or coffee before bed- it can be pretty hard to sleep with too much caffeine in your system.

 

5. Washing your hands.

Probably one of the best ways to stay healthy is to wash your hands regularly. Every trolley, door handle or surface you touch could potentially harbour bacteria and bugs. Be sure to wash regularly, and carrying on a small bottle of sanitiser can be a good idea for those times you can't get to a hand basin.
